Global view: The politics of hidden videos

How to deal with activists is a question livestock industries the world over continue to wrestle with.

One of the latest unique approaches many are watching closely has taken root in Australia, where industry-driven proposed legislation is seeking to effectively turn the tables on controversial hidden video campaigns done in the name of animal welfare.

Turning the tables on activists

If protecting animals is the top priority, why not report instances of cruelty right away when they are identified? This is just one example of the difficult questions underlying the senator's private Bill, which would force activists to report cruelty immediately, presumably rather than waiting for timing that seeks to maximize impact in support of activist campaign agendas. Specifically, the bill would attempt to make it illegal for video footage of animal cruelty to be displayed if it has not already been shown to authorities.

Another key part of the proposed legislation is to protect operations from trespass. This component features penalties specific to activities involving livestock operations and covers "conduct involving threats, vandalism, property damage, criminal trespass, harassment or intimidation to ... persons connected with a lawful animal enterprise."

Learn more here on the website of the senator who introduced the Bill.
